Dr. Ellina Samantroy Jena is a faculty at V.V. Giri National Labour Institute, Noida. She is also the co-coordinator of Centre for Gender and Labour at VVGNLI. She has completed her M.A, M.Phil and Ph.D. in Sociology from Centre for Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her Ph.D. thesis was on ‘Changing Youth Culture: A study of Young Urban Professionals in Delhi’. Before joining this institute she was Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Banaras Hindu University and has taught there for 6 years.
Her research interests include: Gender Statistics, Time Use Studies, Work and Family Life Balance, Unpaid work, Gender, Work and Social Protection, Labour Regulation and International Labour Standards.
During her career at VVGNLI, she has undertaken research projects on themes like, Reconciliation of Work and Family Life: An Exploration of Time Use Patterns of Working Women in Delhi & NCR, ILO Convention 181 : Issues and Challenges in the Context of Private Placement Agencies in India and Engendering Gender Statistics: An Analysis of Gender Differentiated Statistics in India. Presently, she is working on the study “Understanding Women’s Work: Gendered Analysis of Women’s Household Work and Labour Market Participation in North East India” and a collaborative VVGNLI-UNICEF study on “Child Labour Situation in India”.
She co-ordinates training programmes on themes like: Research Methods in Gender issues in Labour; Empowering Women Organisers; Gender, Labour Laws and International Labour Standards; Gender, Work and Social Protection; Leadership Development for Trade Union Leaders, etc. at the institute and outside.
She has published books, several papers, articles and book reviews in peer-reviewed and reputed academic journals, contributed chapters for edited volumes and articles in newspapers and digital dailies. Her book (co-authored) titled, ‘Globalisation and Social Change in India’ was published in 2012 by Rawat Publications. The other books authored by her include: ‘Sociology of Indian Society’ and ‘Social Problems’ published by Vikas Publishing House, New Delhi in 2011. She has presented research papers in various International and National Conferences and seminars including the 37thInternational Conference on Time Use Research (2015) at Ankara,Turkey, 57th Annual conference of The Indian Society of Labour Economics, (2015) and International Conference on Deepening India Korea relations: Towards a Sustainable Future (2014) etc. She has undergone training on Labour Market Statistics at International Training Centre of the ILO at Turin,Italy in 2015 .She has delivered special lectures at National Statistical Systems Training Academy (NSSTA), Arjun Singh Centre for Distance Learning, Jamia Millia Islamia and Malviya Centre for Peace Research, Banaras Hindu University. She has also delivered Video and Radio talks for National Institute of Open Schooling and Radio talks for Gyan Vani, IGNOU. She is also involved in reviewing and developing academic curriculum and e-content of various Universities and institutions in India.
