The construction sector in India is the second largest employment generation with more than eight crore workforce. It is dominated by the most valuable segment of the unorganized labour in India who lack basic amenities and welfare facilities. In order to regulate the employment and working conditions of the building and other construction workers and to provide for their safety, health and welfare the Building and Other Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1996 was passed. Similarly, the Building and Construction Workers Cess Act,1996 was passed for generating funds for the welfare of building and other construction workers. It has been seen that despite a plethora of labour legislation to protect the interest of the labour, the workers work and live in poor conditions and have access to limited social security and welfare benefits.

It would encourage researchers to identify emerging areas for research on labour issues from a gender perspective and enable them to theorize and engage in practical applications of their knowledge in their research pursuits.
